Apple Filling:
  • 1 Granny Smith apples (peeled, sliced thinly)
  • 3 Honeycrisp apples (peeled, sliced thinly)
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 4 TBSP cold unsalted butter, diced
  • 1 teaspoon of flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Pie Crust:
  • 2 ½ cups of flour
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • ½ pound of vegetable shortening
  • 1 egg
  • ½ TBSP white distilled vinegar
  • water
  • 2 TBSP sugar (for sprinkling on the top of the pie)
  • 2 TBSP milk, cream, or egg wash (for the top of the pie)


    1. In a large bowl, mix together the apples, ¼ cup sugar, and ¼ teaspoon cinnamon to make the filling
    2. In another large bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Add the cold shortening to the flour mixture and using a pastry cutter, break the shortening into the flour until it resembles small peas.
    3. In a liquid measuring cup, mix the egg and vinegar together. Add enough water so that there is exactly ½ cup of liquid.
    4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients so that the dough forms a ball. Try not to overwork the dough. Separate into two equal balls, wrap with plastic wrap, and place in the refrigerator to rest for at least 1 hour.
    5. Preheat the oven to 400°.
    6. Remove the pie dough from the fridge and roll out into two rounds. Place the first round at the bottom of the pie dish.
    7. Sprinkle the bottom of the pie with 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of flour. Pour the apple filling into the pie pan and place butter throughout the filling.
    8. Place the second pie round on top and poke vent holes at the top.
    9. Brush with eggwash, milk, or cream and sprinkle with sugar.
    10. Bake the pie in the oven at 400° for 15 minutes then lower the temperature to 350° and continue to bake for 30 minutes.
    11. Remove from oven, let cool, and enjoy!
